It’s the third week of January and that New Year’s Resolution of working out at Ping four times a week is looking less and less attainable. While I don’t want you to give up on your spring break body, you should explore other ways to better yourself as a college student! New Year’s resolutions can be tricky sometimes when thinking about how you want to better yourself, but there are plenty of ways you can tackle the remainder of this year and excel at transitioning into a better version of yourself. For instance, there are multiple ways you can focus on enhancing your professional side.
- Reach Out More to Professors and Advisors
Professors and advisors at OU are more than happy to talk to you about your academic career. Thinking about adding a minor or certificate to enhance your resume? Hit them up! Not to mention, they are also phenomenal networking tools. Becoming more connected with your professors and advisors could open up so many opportunities to potential internships and careers. Plus, you don’t have to worry about sending awkward emails to an advisor you barely know to ask them to be a reference if you talk to them early on.
One of the best pieces of advice I got after attending the 2015 PRSSA National Conference was that young professionals should read more about their trade. This means that we should stay in touch with upcoming trends and how the industry is constantly changing. - Enhance Your Personal Brand
Creating a personal brand isn’t something that can just be done in one day. It takes time to build a social media presence and establish yourself as someone worth following. This year, develop your personal brand to represent your authentic self. - Stop Comparing Your Success To Your Friends’ Successes
Sometimes we can get too caught up thinking about how the grass seems greener on the other side, which is understandable because we are all in a journalism program that has been named one of the best in the country. We are all at the top of our academic game and trying to boost our credentials on our resumes to seem more appealing to future employers. In 2017, avoid feeling inadequate to your friends by focusing more of your energy towards yourself.
- Write Down Impossible Goals
Did you know people with written goals are 50% more likely to achieve their goals than people without goals? Take out a piece of paper and make a list of goals that may seem impossible. Then, make a list of the factors that are standing in your way from obtaining your goal. From there, approach each factor with step-by-step instructions outlining how you can combat each issue. Nothing is impossible. You are a Scripps Kid and 2017 has brilliant opportunities in store for you. The only way you can make it to those opportunities is if you have a sense of direction and motivation to reach the “unreachable.”
